Del Martin Died - Founder of Lesbian Organization Daughters of Bilitis

Del Martin, one of the most famous lesbians in the world and founder of lesbian organization Daughters of Bilitis died today in San Francisco. She was 87. This sad news comes only two months after Del Martin married her lesbian girlfriend of 55 years – Phyllis Lyon.

Poor Del Martin. For 55 years she fought for rights of gay people, but she lived to see herself married to the same sex love of her life. Such a heart breaking story.

We have reported two months ago when Daughters of Bilitis Founders Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were about to get married. The marriage was sealed on June 16 making Daughters of Bilitis the first lesbian couple to wed in California. Fast forward two months ahead and the sad news comes – Del Martin is no longer with us :(

According to Kate Kendell, who’s an executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Del Martin was admitted to the San Francisco hospital due to health complications which deteriorated after she broke her arm. Phyllis Lyon was by her side all the time during her last moments. RIP Del Martin.

Daughters of Bilitis Founders Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon Set to Marry

Daughters of Bilitis – widely recognized as the first lesbian organization in the US was founder in 1955 in San Francisco, California by two fine gay women Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon. When Daughters of Bilitis was established, lesbianism was deemed wrong and harmful and women “suffering” from it were routinely submitted to mental institutions and treated by electroshocks in efforts to rid them off their deviant behavior. Back then it was illegal for two women to dance with each other (this is not going berserk) and to fall in love with the same sex partner could get you fired from work or sent to jail.

Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were a young couple and felt genuine love for each other. They begun the Daughters of Bilitis movement along with 6 other women and now, more than half a century later, the two ladies will become first married lesbian couple in San Francisco. Private ceremony will take place tomorrow in San Francisco City Hall and will be officiated by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Phyllis Lyon is now 84 year old and Del Martin is 87. They’ve been together for 55 years – which is remarkable in this day and age for any couple when divorce rates are through the roof. What a great gift after decades of fighting for gay rights. May Daughters of Bilitis live on.
