Del Martin Died – Founder of Lesbian Organization Daughters of Bilitis

Del Martin, one of the most famous lesbians in the world and founder of lesbian organization Daughters of Bilitis died today in San Francisco. She was 87. This sad news comes only two months after Del Martin married her lesbian girlfriend of 55 years – Phyllis Lyon.
Poor Del Martin. For 55 years she fought for rights of gay people, but she lived to see herself married to the same sex love of her life. Such a heart breaking story.
We have reported two months ago when Daughters of Bilitis Founders Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon were about to get married. The marriage was sealed on June 16 making Daughters of Bilitis the first lesbian couple to wed in California. Fast forward two months ahead and the sad news comes – Del Martin is no longer with us 
According to Kate Kendell, who’s an executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Del Martin was admitted to the San Francisco hospital due to health complications which deteriorated after she broke her arm. Phyllis Lyon was by her side all the time during her last moments. RIP Del Martin.
