John Demjanjuk aka Ivan the Terrible Charged with 27900 Counts
Monday, July 13th, 2009The legal saga surrounding the case of John Demjanjuk who’s accused of being Ivan the Terrible, a Nazi guard at Sobibor Concentration Camp continues and is near its final chapter. Prosecutors from Germany’s Munich formally charged John Demjanjuk with 27,900 counts of being an accessory to murder at a Sobibor Nazi death camp during World War II. John Demjanjuk, who is 89 year old was deported from the United States last May.
John Demjanjuk who was born in Ukraine says he was fighting the Nazi soldiers as member of the Red Army but was captured and spent the rest of the war as prisoner of war. He insists he’s not the Nazi guard known as Ivan the Terrible and that he never hurt anyone. Now that the charges have been officially filed, German court must decide whether to pursue a trial (most likely) and set a date. Doctors found John Demjanjuk fit to stand trial but the questioning must be limited to no more than two, 90 minute sessions a day.
