Hang Son Doong in Vietnam - Photos of The Largest Cave in the World

We humans have been occupying planet Earth for thousands of years, yet we continue finding new spots that just blow you away. Hang Son Doong is the largest cave in the world, yet it was only discovered some 20 years ago. If the world’s largest cave was only discovered 20 years ago, imagine how much there still is to be discovered. And that’s after thousands of years of being on this planet (more than 6 Billion of us).

When translated from Vietnamese, Hang Son Doong roughly means Mountain River Cave. Hang Son Doong is so large, you could build a full sized skyscraper inside. The cave even has its own jungle, enclosed within cave’s caverns.

The credit for the discovery of Hang Son Doong goes to a Vietnamese man by the name of Ho-Khanh. After he shared what he found with local villagers back in 1991, the people went to check the cave out, but were too afraid of frightening noises made by the underground river so no proper mapping of the caverns was done. Fast forward to 2009 and you have a team of pros from the British Cave Research Association who were prepared for the unexpected and stepped inside in full gear.

Howard Limbert, who’s a lead researcher said that Hang Son Doong is about five times larger than Phong Nha, a cave that previously held the title for the largest cave in Vietnam. According to Howard Limbert and his team, the largest chamber of Hang Son Doong is 5 kilometers long and 200 meters tall. How’s that for a huge space.

The roof over one of the caverns collapsed, the researchers found, allowing enough light in, which resulted in vegetation growth, hence the discovery of the jungle within the cave.

Hang Son Doong is located near the border of Vietnam with Laos. We have yet to learn more about this prime in the world of caves on Earth. BTW, the end of the cave has not been reached yet. There is no knowing as of yet just how far Hang Son Doong goes.

Gumbrechts Green Pit Viper Discovered in Mekong Delta (pics)

Look at this beauty. This is a picture of a Gumbrechts Green Pit Viper (Trimeresurus gumprechti). Aside from Gumbrechts Green Pit Vipers, scientists have discovered over 1000 species of animals in Mekong Delta in south-east Asia in last 10 years, many of them believed to have been extinct.

Mekong delta spans from Cambodia, through Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and province of Yunnan in China. Gumbrechts Green Pit Viper is the coolest animal I have seen in a long time.

Rick Rescorla - An Actual 9/11 Hero

Here’s a rare find – an actual 9/11 hero. His name is Rick Rescorla, a British soldier who moved to America, became a citizen and fought for his adopted country in Vietnam. He remained in service till 1990, after that he got into commercial banking. His company occupied 22 floors of the south tower of the World Trade Center.

When the planes hit, Rick Rescorla evacuated 2,700 people out of the skyscraper. When those were safe, he went back inside on another rescue mission as there were still thousands of people inside. This time he was entrapped as the tower collapsed ending his life.

Rick Rescorla is a true 9/11 hero. I tend to use word “hero” lightly as it gets attributed to people who have not done anything heroic to deserve being called one. Rick Rescorla did risk his life and at the end it cost him his life. Thanks to his doing, 2,700 people were saved from certain death. Many of those who died in crushing towers of 9/11 attacks are now referred to as “heroes”. It’s about time one of them was identified as an actual hero. His name is Rick Rescorla, may his soul rest in peace.

Another Miss USA fell on her ass during Miss Universe pageant making it second year in a row after Rachel Smith glamorously started a tradition. Crystle Stewart graced the floor of the Crown Convention Center at Diamond Bay Resort in Nha Trang, Vietnam with priceless ass touch down as billions of people watched the broadcast on their TVs.

Actually, this is good news for Miss USA Crystle Stewart. She really had no chance at winning and her name would go to oblivion anyway after Miss Universe, but by falling on her ass she’s sure to get her name passed around YouTube making her more discussed than Miss Venezuela – 22 year old Dayana Mendoza – an actual winner of Miss Universe. Dayana Mendoza is a former kidnap victim. How sad :(
